The morning after a hailstorm, a roofer's phone rings all day while every crew is on a roof. An answering service for a roofing company, AI or live, answers all of those calls at once: it sends a leak to the on-call crew for a tarp, books storm inspections with the address, roof age and insurer, and puts every lead into your CRM. It should also stay away from two things that state laws restrict: talking about what a policy covers, and any offer about the homeowner's deductible.

Some services on this page may pay us a commission if you sign up through our links. It doesn't change what we report: prices and features come from each vendor's own pages, read 1 November 2026. How we compare.

Storm days and missed calls

After a July 2024 windstorm near Missoula, the owner of A&B Roofing told NBC Montana his company had gone from 15 to 20 calls a week to that many calls a day, and was booked until at least mid-August for estimates alone; some homeowners wanted tarps on before the next rain (NBC Montana, August 2024). That's the day an answering service earns its fee: every call is answered at once, and no one has to climb down a ladder to take a message. Plan for a surge like that, and check overage prices before storm season.

What a roofing answering service must handle

Write these rules down before the trial, the way you'd brief a new office manager before storm season:

CallWhat should happen
Water coming in, a tree on the roof, exposed deckingUrgent: the on-call crew by transfer or text at once, for a tarp; a message and a callback time if no one answers.
Storm damage (hail, wind)Address, storm date, what's damaged, roof type and age, inside water spots, residential or commercial, and the insurer; book the free inspection in your service area.
A new roof or a repair quoteRoof type, rough size and stories, timeline; book the estimator into the slots you set. No prices on the phone unless you've written them down.
A question about an insurance claimClaim number, insurer and adjuster's details; no answers about what the policy covers.
“Will you cover my deductible?”No offer of any kind; the owner or office manager handles it (see the rules below).
FinancingOnly the general terms you supply; then book the estimate.
A job in progress or a warranty questionThe project lead or a message with the address and job details.
Suppliers, subcontractors, canvassersYour list of names goes straight through or to a message, not the customer script.
Spanish-speaking callerAnswer in Spanish, or transfer to a Spanish speaker.
Decision diagram of a call to a roofing company, often the morning after a storm. If water is coming in now or a tree is on the roof, the service reaches the on-call crew for a tarp, with a message if no one answers. Otherwise: storm damage gets the address, storm date, roof type and age and the insurer, and a free inspection is booked; a new roof or repair gets the size and timeline and an estimator visit; a claim question gets the claim number and adjuster noted, with no coverage advice.
The call paths this guide recommends: active leaks to the on-call crew, storm inspections booked with the details your estimator needs, and insurance questions noted rather than answered.

AI receptionists with a roofing setup

These publish a roofing page and a price. An AI answers every call at the same time, which is the point on a storm day; they differ in how they reach the on-call crew, which roofing CRMs they name and what they say about insurance.

Dialzara at its cheapest plan, since its FAQ says live transfer can be switched on by request; its pricing page lists transfers on the $349 plan. NextPhone at the $199 a month its blog gives for its AI plan (NextPhone); its roofing page shows no price. My AI Front Desk counts its 200 voice minutes plus 1,000 included overage credits (about 40 minutes); KaiCalls' allowances are approximate; Quo is its Business plan billed monthly plus Sona; Abby Connect counts an AI minute as half an Abby Minute; Smith.ai's live receptionists bill by the call. Prices from each vendor's pricing page, read 1 November 2026, except MAP Communications, PATLive and Posh, as checked 21 October 2026. Deductibles, adjusters and other rules

A summary, not legal advice. Several states limit what a roofer, and anyone answering a roofer's phone, may say about insurance claims; these two show what to keep out of the script.

  • No offers about the deductible or the claim. In Florida, a contractor may not offer a residential property owner “a rebate, gift, gift card, cash, coupon, waiver of any insurance deductible, or any other thing of value” in exchange for a roof inspection or for making a claim (Fla. Stat. 489.147(2)(b)).
  • No coverage advice. The same section bars “Interpreting policy provisions or advising an insured regarding coverages or duties under the insured’s property insurance policy” unless the contractor is a licensed public adjuster (Fla. Stat. 489.147(2)(d)). In Texas, “A contractor may not act as a public adjuster or advertise to adjust claims” for any property the contractor is or may be working on (Tex. Ins. Code 4102.163).
  • What that means for the script. Take the insurer, claim number and adjuster's details; book the inspection; say your team will go over the claim; and send every coverage or deductible question to a person. Other states have their own rules; ask your lawyer or your state's contractor board.
  • Recording calls. Most AI receptionists record every call. Federal law allows a recording “where one of the parties to the communication has given prior consent” (18 U.S.C. 2511); the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press lists about 11 states that mainly require every party's consent, Florida among them, plus Connecticut and Nevada for phone calls, and advises assuming the stricter law applies across state lines (RCFP). If you're in one, have the greeting say the call is recorded.
  • Calling homeowners back with AI. The FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under the TCPA (FCC 24-17); ask your lawyer what consent an AI follow-up call needs. For texts, our guide to texting callers covers registration and the federal rules.

Test plan for the trial

  1. 7 a.m. after a hailstorm. “Hail last night, and there's a brown spot on my bedroom ceiling.” Did it take the address, storm date, roof age and insurer, book the inspection, and flag the water?
  2. A leak during rain. “Water is dripping into my kitchen right now.” Did the on-call crew get it within minutes, and did the caller hear when to expect someone?
  3. A coverage question. “Will my insurance pay for a whole new roof?” Did it avoid any answer about coverage and take the claim details for your team?
  4. A deductible question. “Other roofers said they'd cover my deductible. Will you?” Did it make no offer and pass the call to the owner?
  5. Ten calls at once. Have friends call together. Did every call get answered, and did every lead reach your CRM with the address?

Then read the transcripts, check the leads in your CRM, fix the rules and call again before storm season.

Questions roofers ask

What does a roofing answering service do?

It answers your line when the crews and the office can't: it sends active leaks to the on-call crew, books storm inspections and estimates with the address, roof details and insurer, takes messages on jobs in progress, and puts every lead into your CRM. AI services answer many calls at once on a storm day; live services bring people to the harder calls.

How much does a roofing answering service cost?

At 100 two-minute calls a month, the AI receptionists on this page cost $59 to $212.50 and the live services $269 to $915. A storm month can bring several times your usual calls, so check overage prices first. Prices read 1 November 2026.

Can an AI receptionist handle storm-day call volume?

That's its strength: an AI receptionist answers many calls at the same time, where a person answers one. Test it by having several people call at once during the trial, and check that every lead reaches your CRM.

Which answering services work with JobNimbus or AccuLynx?

My AI Front Desk, Cira and Goodcall name both on their own pages, and NextPhone connects to both through Zapier; Abby Connect and AnswerFirst name JobNimbus, and PATLive names AccuLynx. My AI Front Desk also names Roofr, Leap and CompanyCam.

What can an answering service say about insurance claims?

Keep it to taking details: the insurer, the claim number, the adjuster and the damage, then book the inspection. Florida bars contractors from interpreting policy provisions or advising on coverage unless they're licensed public adjusters, and from offering anything of value, such as waiving a deductible, for an inspection or a claim; Texas bars contractors from acting as public adjusters. This is general information, not legal advice.

Should the answering service handle leak emergencies?

Yes, by rules you write: water coming in, a tree on the roof or exposed decking goes to the on-call crew at once, by transfer or text, with a message and a callback time if no one answers.
