Best AI Answering Services

After-hours and 24/7 answering services: AI and live, priced

Nearly one call in eight reaches a trades business after hours. What voicemail, a live service and an AI receptionist do with that call, what nights and weekends cost ($38.60 to $415 a month for 40 calls), and how to get the emergencies to your phone.

An after-hours answering service picks up when your office is closed: evenings, weekends and holidays. It takes the message, books the job, and puts a real emergency through to whoever is on call. A live answering service does it with a person; an AI receptionist does it with an AI voice, at the same price day or night. This guide shows how many calls you can expect after hours, what each option does with them, what nights and weekends cost, and how to get the urgent ones to your phone.

How many calls come after hours

  • Trades: businesses on ServiceTitan get 10.7% to 12.1% of their calls outside normal business hours, “nearly 1 in 8”, in data from May 2025 to July 2026 (ServiceTitan).
  • It moves with the season: 14.1% of calls to residential HVAC shops came outside business hours in June 2025, against 9.8% in October (ServiceTitan, June 2026).
  • Small businesses in general: 14.1% of the calls NextPhone's AI answered came after hours, 7.4% on weekends and 6.6% on weekday evenings and early mornings, and 23.6% of those became a lead or a booking, against 18.6% in business hours (NextPhone, October 2026).
  • Law firms: “roughly one in five calls to a law firm comes in after hours”, in Smith.ai's analysis of 3.2 million law firm calls (Smith.ai, October 2026).

Plenty of calls go unanswered in the daytime too. Across the 70 million calls in Invoca's 2026 benchmarks, 56% were answered by a person, and 52% in home services (Invoca, July 2026; home services report). In a 2024 secret shop of 500 law firms, 40% answered the phone (Clio).

When nobody answers, callers move on. In a CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers, 78% said they had abandoned a business after an unanswered call; 42% said they leave a voicemail, and 21% that they immediately call another business (CallRail, September 2025). What people do can differ from what they say: on Invoca's platform, fewer than 3% of callers sent to voicemail left a message (Invoca, May 2024). If you can't answer at all, missed call text back at least texts each caller you miss.

ServiceTitan, NextPhone, Smith.ai, Invoca and CallRail sell phone or field-service software; their figures come from their own customers and surveys, and Clio sells legal software.

Three ways to answer the 7 p.m. call

Voicemail costs nothing extra and suits calls that can wait. Anything that can't wait needs a service that answers, sorts the urgent from the routine, and reaches you when it matters:

Many businesses combine them: an AI receptionist for the volume, with a live service or your own phone for the calls that need a person. Our virtual receptionist guide prices the live services for daytime calls too. If voicemail stays part of the plan, our free voicemail greeting generator writes the after-hours and holiday messages.

Live 24/7 answering services: what nights and weekends cost

Most of the live services we checked charge the same rate at 2 a.m. as at 2 p.m. and include 24/7 answering in every plan, so the minutes set the bill, not the hour. As each service publishes it:

Many services let you pick the hours they answer, so the same plan works as a night-only service or around the clock. Smith.ai, for one, sends calls outside your chosen hours to a number you pick or to voicemail.

AI receptionists after hours: rules, transfers and alerts

An AI receptionist costs the same at 3 a.m. as at noon. What to check is how it treats an urgent call while you're closed: whether it can follow different rules after hours, put the caller through to your on-call phone, and alert you. As each vendor publishes it:

Set up after-hours coverage in five steps

Decision diagram: the service answers a call that comes in while you're closed and checks your written rules. An emergency is transferred to the on-call phone, and if no one picks up it tries the backup number, or texts and keeps trying; any other call becomes a message or a booking, with a summary waiting for you in the morning.
How an after-hours answering service handles a call: emergencies go to the person on call under your rules; everything else waits for the morning.
  1. Write down what counts as an emergency, who is on call each night and weekend, and a backup number. Most after-hours calls can wait: in a SupplyHouse survey of 303 trades workers, pros said just 30% of their after-hours calls were true emergencies (SupplyHouse, June 2026), and HappyCo, which answers more than 12,000 after-hours maintenance emergency calls a month, says more than 40% can be de-escalated (HappyCo, February 2026).
  2. Route calls by the clock. Forward your line to the service only while you're closed, or let it answer all day with separate after-hours rules. Upfirst can limit transfers to set hours, My AI Front Desk uses time controls by day and hour, and Goodcall can import holiday hours from your Google or Yelp listing.
  3. Give the on-call person a way to take the call. A transfer that rings a sleeping technician needs a fallback: a second number, a text, or a service that keeps trying. Smith.ai's live receptionists can text you to accept or reject a transfer, and MAP works down an escalation list until someone answers.
  4. Decide what wakes you up. Upfirst can text you only for emergencies, Rosie texts or emails when it detects an urgent after-hours call, and KaiCalls texts a summary after every call. Have everything else waiting for you in the morning.
  5. Test it at night. Call your own line after hours with an emergency and with a routine request, then check what reached your phone, how fast, and what the caller was told. Repeat the test after every change to your rules.

After-hours calls by trade

  • HVAC: after-hours calls peak in summer, 14.1% of calls in June 2025 (ServiceTitan). Our HVAC guide covers no-heat triage and the gas and carbon monoxide script.

See our plumber guide for burst pipes and cold snaps.
  • Law firms: in Smith.ai's data, firms that book qualified leads into a consultation during the call convert 64% of them, after hours too; without real-time booking, conversion falls to 12%, and to 7% after hours (Smith.ai). Our law firm guide covers intake and conflicts.

Questions owners ask

What is an after-hours answering service?

A service that answers your business line when you're closed: it takes messages, books jobs or appointments, and puts urgent calls through to the person on call, following your rules. It can be a live answering service, where a person answers, or an AI receptionist.

How much does an after-hours answering service cost?

At 40 after-hours calls a month of two minutes each, the AI receptionists on this page cost $38.60 to $149 and the live services $158.60 to $415, on the cheapest published plan that can transfer an emergency. Live prices read 21 October 2026; AI prices checked 21 October 2026.

Do answering services charge more for nights and weekends?

Most of the ones we checked don't. PATLive, Smith.ai, Ruby, AnswerFirst and Abby Connect say in writing that nights, weekends or holidays cost nothing extra, and Answering Service Care includes 24/7 support in all plans. Davinci's live receptionists work 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekdays, with automated answering at other times. Ask for the policy in writing before you sign.

Can an AI receptionist handle after-hours emergencies?

Yes, if you give it written emergency rules and an on-call number. Upfirst, Dialzara, My AI Front Desk, Goodcall, KaiCalls and AptaBook describe emergency transfers or escalation, and Rosie alerts you by text or email. Test it with a call at night before you rely on it.

Is a 24/7 answering service the same as an after-hours service?

A 24/7 service answers every call around the clock; an after-hours service answers only while you're closed. Many services sell both: you choose the hours, and calls outside them go to you or to voicemail.

How many calls come in after hours?

In the trades, 10.7% to 12.1% of calls arrive outside normal business hours, nearly one in eight (ServiceTitan, May 2025 to July 2026). For law firms it is roughly one call in five (Smith.ai, October 2026).
