The burst-pipe script
Give your AI receptionist the first steps to read out while it connects the caller to you. State Farm's advice for frozen and burst pipes (State Farm):
- Shut off the main water valve and open the faucets.
- Stay away from electrical appliances near standing water.
- Never thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame.
- If the taps run dry in freezing weather, leave them open and call a plumber.
Add where the main shut-off usually is in the homes you serve, in your own words, and have a plumber approve it. For a gas smell near a water heater or gas line, the AI says to leave the building on foot, avoid switches and phones indoors, and call 911 and the gas company from a safe place (PHMSA), then alerts you. Safety words always come before questions about the address.
Quoting to Google's AI
Google now phones local home-service businesses for homeowners to check prices and availability, and sends the homeowner a comparison (JobNimbus; Google). Expect questions such as drain-cleaning prices and water-heater replacement costs. Give your AI receptionist a sheet it can quote: trip or diagnostic fee, drain-clearing range, water-heater replacement range, and your earliest slot. Some owners give Google's AI deliberately vague ranges (r/smallbusiness); the homeowner then sees that next to clearer quotes from other plumbers.

Is there a free answering service for plumbers?
Not a useful one. Smith.ai's free AI plan covers 25 calls a month and needs a card; Quo includes 10 AI calls with its phone plan. Jobber's receptionist is a $29 add-on. Most tools offer a 7- to 14-day free trial.
How much does a plumbing answering service cost?
For 150 two-minute calls, the general tools on this page cost $59 (Cira) to $149 (Rosie); across the AI services we could price at that volume, the range is $59 to $270. Jobber users can add Jobber Receptionist for $29, and Sameday starts at $449. Human services charge $350 to $1,725 for the same volume.
Can an AI receptionist dispatch the on-call plumber?
It can transfer the call live and text a summary. Rosie's $299 plan tries several numbers in turn. Full dispatch onto a board is done by ServiceTitan's agent, Sameday and Avoca inside field-service software.
Can it tell a burst pipe from a dripping faucet?
Yes, if you tell it how. Give it urgent keywords (burst, flooding, water everywhere, sewage) and a rule for each. Jobber's receptionist uses "burst pipe" as an example escalation keyword.
What should the AI tell a caller with a burst pipe?

Will an AI receptionist cope with a January freeze?
It answers many calls at once, which a person can't. Check your minute or call allowance: water-heater installs peak in January, and frozen-pipe calls arrive in bursts.
What about calls from suppliers and subcontractors?
Whitelist them. Cira sends whitelisted numbers straight to normal voicemail so they skip the AI's intake questions.
How should I answer when Google's AI calls about a plumbing job?
Treat it as a real homeowner: give your trip fee or an honest range, your earliest slot and a next step. The homeowner reads a summary of what you said next to other plumbers' answers.
Is an AI answering service better than hiring a dispatcher?
For answering and booking at night and in rushes, yes, at a fraction of the cost. A dispatcher still wins at juggling technicians, parts and angry customers during the day.
